There is a continuing problem in today’s society
where high numbers of counterfeit goods can enter the marketplace
causing many potential problems. Additionally, there is
a growth of parallel market (or market diversion) trading
for authentic branded goods. The results of these problems
can vary widely from unsafe and untested counterfeit
goods entering the supply chain, through to brand erosion
in the brand owners' target markets. This can truly damage
a brand's image, leading to an uncertainty in the
future of a brand's success. It is essential for
brand owners to keep their brands protected from such harmful
activities and it is equally essential for the users or
re-sellers of branded goods to be able to trust the integrity
of the goods they either consume or sell on to the end consumer.
Brand owners are continually looking at innovative ways
to manage the integrity of their products. RFID is emerging
as a technology that can provide benefits both from an identification
perspective and also from an inventory management perspective.
The application of Mu-chip technology in this market sector
can provide tagged items with their own individual unique
code. Since the Mu-chip is a read only memory chip, the
unique number cannot be changed and the Mu-chip itself is
very difficult to duplicate. When combined with an external
antenna the Mu-chip still presents a small form factor that
allows for its embedding into many types of items.
As part of a wider IT system, with relevant reader infrastructure
and back office applications, the Mu-chip can be used as
a way of guaranteed authentication on all Mu tagged items.
