There
are many applications in the industrial arena where the
ability to track and trace components and end products plays
an important part in the ability of organisations to manage
their day to day operations. The range of applications is
very diverse and ranges from spare parts management, validation
of components, usage monitoring and service/warranty issues
through to manufacturing control and distribution of manufactured
products. In some of these cases, existing auto-id technologies
(for example, bar coding) can be used but in many cases
the application of bar code labels into a ruggedised environment
can be problematic.
RFID tags incorporating the mu-chip can
be developed and attached to items including metal objects
to provide enhanced levels of visibility and operational
control. Due to the small size of the mu-chip and a range
of inlet packaging options, new possibilities are created
regarding the type, size and robustness of the tags.
The benefits for the user come not only
through the accuracy of results, improved efficiency and
control of usage data but also potential reductions in labour
costs and operational process costs.
