Optical communication systems are now
reaching terabit/second (one million million bits per second)
data transfer rates. Coherent spectroscopy and ultrafast
sampling based on femtosecond measurement techniques are
used to study optical and electronic devices and materials,
both for understanding the basic physics of ultrafast transistors,
laser diodes and optical switches, and for creating novel
concepts of all-optical switching devices based on the newly
found coherent control phenomena.
